About

Cake4Kids Connecticut Co-Ambassadors Ari Motta and Lisa Kall

Ari Motta

I love an adventure big or small with my all-time favorites so far being Seattle and Quebec.  In my free time, you’ll find me happily creating: baking treats, crocheting, embroidery, or trying out whatever new project catches my eye. I’m passionate about volunteering with nonprofits and love using my creativity and planning skills to help make a difference. I’m the go-to person for organizing events and celebrations but you’ll always find me behind the scenes, making sure everything runs like clockwork (and yes, probably with a color-coded checklist in hand!).

Why did you want to join Cake4Kids in your area? Through my work at United Way I had implemented a “Birthday in a Box” initiative. This initiative provides local food pantries with all the birthday “essentials” which include cake mix and a can of soda to bake a cake without eggs and oil. This was by far one of my favorite projects but I wanted to find a way to utilize my skills and love for baking to provide custom cakes for children in our community and luckily, I found Cake4Kids!

What’s your favorite thing to bake? My favorite thing to bake for others? Cakes and cupcakes, whether it’s for a celebration or just because everyone deserves a sweet treat. When it comes to cupcakes, I can never stick to just one flavor! There must be options so everyone finds something they love! As for me, I’m not big on frosting (shocking, I know), so my go-to treat is oatmeal butterscotch cookies or a lemon pound cake!

I’m definitely a homebody and haven’t strayed too far from where I grew up. My husband and I ended up buying my great aunt’s house just one town over, so I still run into familiar faces. Grocery store trips often turn into mini family reunions!

I grew up a proud “firehouse brat”—my dad’s a firefighter and still going strong. Funny enough, I married a firefighter, and now our son’s one too, so it’s safe to say it runs in the family!

Even though I love being home, I’ve recently caught the travel bug. My first big trip was to Ireland with a group of 31 (mostly friends!) and it was incredible. These days, we also love visiting our daughter, her fiancé, and their pup in DC and spending time exploring the city with them.

Who inspired your love of baking?

Definitely my mom! I remember one of my birthday cakes, a Barbie dress cake. I thought it was the greatest thing ever! Over the years, she made so many cakes for friends and family, including our wedding cake and our kids’ crazy-themed birthday cakes! I think that’s part of the reason I love baking for Cake4Kids so much and coming up with ways to bring the recipient’s vision to life! Even after having a stroke, my mom continues to amaze me with all the cooking, baking, and decorating she does!

What was your biggest #bakingfail?

I’d have to say when I was younger, maybe 10 or so. My cousin and I loved to come up with different “concoctions”.  We were at my grandmother’s, and we made something so horrible, even the “garbage truck” of a dog, Beau, wouldn’t eat it!
