First Delivery Ever: Unicorn cupcakes
Fun Fact: Maryland has a state dessert - The famous Smith Island Cake. Beginning in the 1800s, Smith Islanders would send these cakes with the watermen on the autumn oyster harvest. The cake is made with 8 to 13 layers of thin yellow cake alternating with chocolate frosting. The thin layers were easier to prepare in woodfired ovens before the island had electricity.

About
Ary Isenberg, Cake4Kids Maryland Ambassador
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I was born in Cuba and grew up in Miami. Maryland has been home since 2012. I met my husband here and we are proud parents of two handsome boys! I love living in the DVM and being able to experience all the seasons as well as taking advantage of all the cool, historical places nearby. In my free time, you can catch me listening to the latest true crime podcast while baking or crafting.
What inspired your love of baking?
I have always loved pretty, elaborate birthday cakes but thought I could never make them myself. So, I decided to start small, by making cake pops in 2011. Eventually I moved on to cupcakes and decorated sugar cookies. I did not start decorating cakes until I volunteered with Cake4Kids in 2021.
What’s your favorite thing to bake?
A themed birthday cake. I like to be creative with the theme and try to challenge myself by baking new themes/techniques whenever possible.
What was your biggest #bakingfail?
I attempted to bake and decorate a cake (for the first time) for my friend's baby shower the night before. I had been making cake pops for a few months and thought, how hard can this be? Well, I was in for a big surprise. I did not know that decorating with a chilled cake would yield better results, and tried to decorate a cool, room temperature cake. It was a disaster! It kept crumbling, it was a big mess. I became so angry that I threw the whole cake in the trash and later realized I could have used it for cake pops for said baby shower!
