Tell us a bit about yourself!
I grew up in Vermont and started baking as a kid, starting with a brownie recipe I found in the pages of Seventeen magazine. I’m a food writer and recipe developer, have authored and coauthored 15 cookbooks, and currently work as an editor at King Arthur Baking Company. Though I’m heading up the Vermont chapter on behalf of King Arthur, I lives in Portland, Maine, with my wife and two teenage sons, who are a very enthusiastic audience for baked goods of all kinds.
What’s your favorite thing to bake?
I like baking fruit pies—it’s always a fun challenge to get a pie with a crisp crust that holds its shape when sliced.
What was your biggest #bakingfail?
I very recently baked a banana cake. It was baking, and baking, and baking and just didn’t seem done. Finally, after an hour and a half, I deemed it done, took it out of the oven and, once it had cooled enough to handle, turned it out of the pan, only to discover it was still molten within. It was then I realized that the bake element on my oven had failed, and the oven was only getting up to 200 degrees :(
