Elise Thomas

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

I live in the Seaport in Boston with my husband, Gregg. We have two children who are now grown and flown, which has given me more time to devote to my hobbies and passions—especially Cake4Kids. My oldest has a severe peanut and nut allergy, which inspired me to bake all of my children's birthday cakes while they were growing up. Over the years, I have also created many birthday and celebratory cakes and treats for friends and family. I love this as a creative way to bring joy to others. Working with Cake4Kids has been a wonderful outlet for this and one that is very near and dear to my heart. I am honored to help lead our Greater Boston chapter.

When I am not baking, you can usually find me skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, reading, and traveling. I also work as a crisis counselor for the Trevor Project.

What or who inspired your love of baking?

My children inspired me to bake and be creative. I loved seeing their delight at the cake creation each birthday! My favorite thing to bake is cupcakes. I particularly enjoy working with fondant to make theme-specific designs.

What is the first thing you ever baked?

The first thing I ever baked was a donut recipe I read about in a Winnie-the Pooh book when I was about 7. My grandmother and I made it together!

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

I love nothing more than organizing and creating new things. Have a block party you want to throw or a new idea for a community event- count me in!

I spent most of my career as a software product manager for that reason, enjoying the collaboration with others to design products.  I always have something “cooking” outside of work as well, whether it’s a community project, neighborhood get-together, or home cafe for charity.  I can’t wait to do more of this with Cake4Kids Greater Boston!

When I’m not noodling about what event might be next, I try to get outside to walk or bike as much as possible.  I’m also an amateur musician (fiddle, clarinet and sax),  weave and knit, and enjoy reading and traveling.

What or who inspired your love of baking?

My Mom.  I started baking at an early age because I just love dessert and it was so much fun to be able to make it myself.  I could both sneak samples of the dough and justify quality control on the finished product.  I’ve made about 20 wedding cakes for family and friends, including my own,  and at one point thought about baking professionally, but realized it’s more enjoyable and less stressful to bake as a volunteer.

What is your favorite thing to bake?

I don’t have a favorite because I always have a long list of new recipes to try! It’s so interesting to see what new flavors or ideas are out there.  That’s also part of the joy of baking and sharing with others.
