About

Mary Campbell, Northern Virginia Ambassador

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I love to be outside - hiking in the woods and being involved with nature, walking my dog, anything near the beach.  I love to travel and see new places. I love music and animals, crafts and cooking. I love to plan fun things to do with my family and friends- parties, concerts, shows. I love to learn new things.  I just love to be around people and laugh and have fun.

Who inspired your love of baking?

I grew up in a very large, fun-loving Portuguese family.  We didn’t have a lot of money growing up but as a child I never realized that because I was surrounded by love.  Every birthday party felt like a giant celebration and the cake was always the main attraction. My Mom always made my brother and I amazing birthday cakes filled with love.  My favorite cake was a Barbie cake, from which I can still remember the magical feeling of sitting center stage in front of the cake while my family and friends sang “Happy Birthday” to me.  One of my favorite traditions around the holidays was when my Aunt, Mom, and I would get together to bake cookies, breads, cakes, and chocolate for upcoming family get-togethers. I still treasure those times today.  When I got older, I started baking birthday cakes for all of my godchildren for their birthdays and, eventually, I had my own children and baked for them for every special occasion and holiday and, of course, their birthdays.

Why did you want to start Cake4Kids in your area?

It had never occurred to me that there are children who won’t get a cake for their birthday.  When I think of the struggles that some of these children deal with, I never once considered whether they would get a cake on their birthday.   Childhood is such a magical time, but it is such a small part of our lives. If we can help to provide a struggling child with a birthday cake, that is truly a gift for all those involved.  Every child should feel loved and special on their birthday, just like I did. This is why I decided to start a chapter in Virginia. I am so grateful for the opportunity to bring this to the Northern Virginia and DC area.
